The bases with frequent openings are those in places people don't want to live in, so they have to commute. If you have to commute in EMS you might as well pack it in and fly for the airlines.


Know what contributes to a happy base? Crews that get along, and have worked with each other enough to establish a natural harmony. Know what messes up a base? Constant turn over and an ever revolving door of workover pilots/med crew so you never really know what to expect when you show up to work that day/night. Far away rural bases are stepping stones to get to where you want to be, everyone at those bases knows it.


The only saving grace some of them might have is that they feel like they have a bit more job security since they know a level 1 trauma center won't open up next door. Sadly though, we all know nothing is a given in this industry.
