The youngins here are the one's taking up the baton when the Old Guard are gone. Not many Vietnam Era Pilots are around anymore. I always liked being around those guys when they told stories about Flying Fire after they got out of the Military. One in particular was a guy who flew Gun Ships back in the day. We were at a big fire camp standing around talking when a new crew came in with a few newbies in tow. It was one person's job to stand in front of the Helicopter and "Direct the pilot"with hand signals when he took off. After a good amount of time and I mean I think the pilot was just messin with the guy because it took him a long time to spool up while the newbie was flappin his arms up and down.,he finally launched! The pilot and I were laughing at this show as the newbie walked away with a look of embarrassment, frustration and accomplishment all rolled into one! I don't see crews giving signals like that anymore.
