I can see that this question begs for a funny answer, however I'll tell you why I stayed in that world. Fire is one of the areas of this business where you really get to use the helicopter in a way that is actually FUN. It's working with a team to successfully fight a fire while using the unique capabilities of the aircraft as well as those of the pilot. It's true that one will never get rich flying fire, but it can be a real adventure. I'll bet that back in the day, long before helicopters came along, most of the guys now flying fire contracts would have as kids, run off and joined a traveling circus. Upon reflection, that's still what we're doing....Actually, It's a great way to develope the experience needed to claim one of the coveted west coast county fire pilot positions with great retirement at the end. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it!
