It was a combination of poor judgement (the Dr., the airline, the security personnel), poor training (security personnel), poor supervision (airline and seciurity personnel), and poor management/policy (airline).


In the end you're going to see some changes that have been a long time coming.  We've been allowing the airlines to operate as if they were in another nation, allowing them to treat their customers with complete disdain by claiming it is in the interest of safety.  You are literally like a captive in a totalitarian state for the duration of your flight and if you complain, you can be arrested.  If you want that kind of complete control over your customers, then you should guarantee a lot higher level service. 


My solution is simply not to fly.  Some people don't have that luxury, and at some point the "duty of care" required from common carriers need to be enforced.
