Use external power for the first start of the day, engines washes, etc. Subsequent starts should be on the aircraft battery, unless the flight is planned on being very short duration, to allow adequate recharging. If you don't use the aircraft battery for real starts, then you will never know the current condition it is in and whether it is capable of delivering a start when you need it on a mission. This will result in either a hot start or a failed start.

We used this back in the Ni-Cad days and followed it into the return to Lead Acid batteries. It is important to actively use them, or they will never deliver the power you need, when you need it.
