I understand how purely hydraulic controls work. (Pressure pushes piston one direction or the other, flight controls open/shut the valves that determine which side the pressure goes to).


I don't understand how the hydraulics work on something like the R44, where the controls are pass-through and it's simply hydraulic boost. It seems that the hyd pump just maintains 500 psi on either side of the piston. In the case, why does it help? Isn't pushing the control into 500psi with 500psi behind it no different than not having hydraulic pressure at all?

Help me understand this.
