Had roommate get swindled by USAA when they wouldn't cover auto damage from getting hit by someone when it was parked outside. Another buddy had issues with getting a home estimate for damages from a storm.
Made the jump after hearing both stories and the fact that Alfa beat USAA's home and auto insurance by almost 20%. Been with Alfa for over 5 years now; got a new roof after a windstorm that was zero headache - they just wrote a check and did it quickly. Added a teenager to the plan recently and my insurance is STILL $100-300 less than other friends I know (with both USAA and other insurance companies).
Haven't looked back since dropping USAA insurance and don't regret it. I do think opening up to the masses is what changed their customer service.
Still bank with them, though. Good credit history and generally they're good enough in that department.
