Interesting numbers...

I'd like to see the graphs over time... Say for the past 10 years or ss.

Actually this salary survey is amazing.  In 1998 I was offered employment with AMC as a SPIFR in a B412 for $32,000. We flew our asses off every day/night with no bonus time and 1/2 after extended 12 hours of duty or even extra $ for workovers, and we attended saftey meetings while off duty at no extra pay too.  So, we have come a long way since then, except for us 20+ year veteran HAA pilots who are now only making just a few thousand $ more than our new hires!!

A $32K salary in 1998 is worth about $61.5 in 2024 dollars. So $99k with other bennies is an improvment. So many factors to consider. This salary survey is a starting point for each individual to weigh the pros and cons of their own situation.

40k then

125k now

The only reason anyone makes money is because of the early phi/air log union. Had they been defeated this difference would be half.

PHI's union certainly started the ball rolling. But the current drain of pilots by the airlines is keeping the pressure on operators to pay better. Fixed-wing training is cheaper and the rewards can be significant. Many military guys get out and barely even consider a RW career.

Shame because RW is very rewarding providing it meets personal, family and retirement realities.  Fixed wing is one runway to another - woo hoo.

One runway to another?  How about seeing the same terrain (water & oil rigs) for the rest of your career?  Yippeeeeeeeee!

FW is not boring. Flying into busy, fast paced airspace is challenging and dynamic.  Add in low wx and it can get serious. Tedious sometimes, yes.  Constantly boring?  Absolutely not. Have you done both?  I have and chose FW.

RW is more fun, I will totally agree with you there but it is a young mans game.  I don't want to wear a helmet and vest or life preserver for the rest of my career.  Comfortable noise cancelling headsets beat the helmet every. single. day.  I also like seeing more than one time zone every week.

Pay and QOL are definitely better in the FW world.

If the FW gig dried up, would I go back to RW? Heck yeah, but I'd miss the better FW lifestyle; and pay.
