Anyone know anything about upcoming OCONUS USG contract jobs?  They used to be plentiful, but with the fall of AFG most have dried up.  Curious what's still out there other than VertRep

It's ok for any rated pilot from any country to come here and take our jobs, but if you are a FAA certified pilot from the good ol US of A you are not welcome.

Truth.

PS- It's because we don't train well in flight school compared to our Worldly brothers and sisters.... I jest.

not sure there is any advantage to working overseas. A pool ems job is paying me 150k plus per diem with little to no overtime. if you want to work over, you could easily make 200k and never leave the US.

The "advantages" to working overseaa are all finanical.  The IRS's Foreign Earned Income Exclusion and Foreign Housing Allowance dropped my AGI (Adjusted Gross Income) dramatically.  Of course, you have to "live" overseas for those to be helpful.  That requires you to be out of the country for like 330 or 340 days of the year (IRS Physical Presence Test), OR have a "Foreign Residence Visa" for the country you're working in.  That will allow you to come and go from the USA as you please, without having to worry about the PPT thing.  Also, the way some employers structure their contracts helps with your tax burden too.

I would venture to bet that I paid significantly less income tax than you, while earning more $$.

Finally, there are a few X-Pat Income Tax services that know all of the ins and outs of how to file your USA income tax returns.  I used Greenback Tax Service the entire time I worked and lived overseas, and found them to be worth every penny.

THe last thing I'll mention is more of a personal b!tch than anything else.  The USA is one of a very small minority of countries that tax the income of their citizens which is made outside of the borders of your home country.  I worked with a number of Brits and other nationalities over the years that didn't get taxed on their income.

If you have to ask you aren't part of the club and won't get the job anyway. All of the current contracts will call you if someone on one of the contracts knows you and will vouch for you.

that started out low time in these positions. These jobs are constantly advertised and not hard to get because they are not great jobs. All travel and low pay. You say this every time somebody asks and it's obvious you don't even work as a pilot.

Get yourself a first class medical and an ATP and you're good to go.

True that!  The ATP is pretty much a must!  A 1st Class medical will help too, but you'll usually end up having to get one for the country you'll be working in before it's over.  Finally, an AW139 rating will open a lot of doors.  They're a bit difficult to get in the USA, but would be well worth the effort if you can do it.
