Should be an oral discussion unless done in a simulator. It's right up there with inducing dynamic rollover. Stupid. |

The problem with VRS training is the idiots who insist that you get fully into it before recovery. No neex. Teach and recover from the very beginning not foully developed. |

Yep, I've seen some really crazy stunts by CFI's and even IP's. The other side of the coin; real schools - factory training don't don't get into full blown max rate of descent VRS. |

full VRS one time to understand that you'd better pay attention and stay out of it. At our normal altitudes, if you get in VRS, you're not getting out. |

it's just like hovering, except you're very much not hovering. just like straight and level except you're turning and climbing? |

We were taught vrs as a maneuver, not an unexpected incident. i would get into it on purpose to decend straight into an LZ, often seeing the needle way past 2000fpm. Pretty hard to shoot at, easy to recover from. But it was a pretty wild oscelation on the way down.
Used the 10/20/30 rule to enter. Demonstrated them right until I retired a couple of years ago. |

A logging fella, we live in VRS, and the above post about the Huey is complete BS. |

Agreed! Logging and seismic drill pilots get into VRS regularly, know how to recognize it and recover. |

in the environment conducisive to VRS. You did not get into it, you escaped the developing conditions before the rotor system developed full blown VRS. |

I don't agree that VRS ( settling with power) was a taught as an approved maneuver. I do think that before you take it out of the training curriculum you had better fully understand what you are playing with. You play around with it in a high power to weight ratio helicopter but if you get into it fully, more power makes the situation worse. There are 3 variables, the elimination of any one will get you out of VRS, hoping you have enough time and altitude to recover. Study Cavitation !!!! |
